UDON EXPAT CLUB’S VISIT TO THE UDON THANI AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER
In the early hours of Thursday June 20, 2013 a small group of UEC’s members assembled at
the airport at the occasion of a long expected excursion.
We were welcomed by Miss Suthida Saengtong (Air Traffic Controller) and Mr Nitikul
Chomtrakul (Air Traffic Controller).
Later that morning also Mr Wichai Kasomchandra (Director, Udon Thani Air Traffic Control
Center), Second from right, took the time to make sure we enjoyed our visit.
At start, while waiting for our group to be complete, we were offered a drink in the
comfortable coffee corner with a view across the runway.
After a short briefing we were invited to climb the stairs to the control room at the top.
Luckily there was an elevator that took us to the 6th floor. However, from that point on we
had to take a few steps more. Easy, especial for us, being such athletes.
At the control room the view across the runway and the town was spectacular. We were
explained the function and possibilities of the various instruments and displays. After that
several planes landed and took off so that we, in real time, could see the working of the
instruments and listen to the conversation between tower and aircraft. All very professional.
Further on we were invited into the conference room where we were shown a trailer about
The founding of the SIAM-AIRCONTROL was in 1948 by airlines, with the consent of the
Royal Thai Government. Later, in 1963, the Government acquired the majority of the
Company’s sharesand they became a State enterprise under the Ministry of Transport. The
name at that time changed into AEROTHAI (Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd.).
Apart from operating the air-control-system, they also manage the maintenance and even
the development of the software programs involved. In addition they maintain a simulating
and training program for their staff. That training is compulsory and has to be completed on
a regular base.
In a dedicated room the training system is installed. With the help of powerful simulators
the airports under control of Udon can be simulated. Flights, landing, take off and possible
problems can be simulated. The trainees can remedy the problem and experience the result
of their action as if it was real.
Udon is the main centre in NE Thailand. They are in charge and deliver staff for the airports
in Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Loei, Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon.
In addition to air-control the company is also involved in similar fields like harbor control for
sea going vessels at sea ports and logistics for container transport by road.
After a very interesting morning we had the opportunity to thank our hosts for the excellent
organized and instructive excursion and had the pleasure to present a small gift as token of
